Statement Essay

Why do I want to study architecture at Cardiff? From an early age, I have been interested in architecture and always wanted to pursue it as a career. After reviewing University courses and attending “open days” I am convinced Cardiff would be an ideal fit for me with the specific course content. I am excited by the wide range of facilities available and feel they will enhance my learning experience. The BSc/ MArch  at the Welsh School of architecture is a highly respected course, ranked amongst the best in the UK and has an excellent alumnus of architects. Additionally, The City of Cardiff has fabulous culture and is packed with stunning works of architecture. A review of a recent exhibition/ building I've visited Recently I visited an exhibition by the RIBA in Marylebone, London that highlighted the  principles of a circular economy and how it can assist in creating more sustainable architecture for the future. I was intrigued to learn how architects can decrease waste by reusing

Physical Self Project

Portrait Project In year 12 I began a project on portraiture. It ran for 4 months and the only requirement was for the final outcome to be painted. This was a series of monochrome drawings I produced. They helped build my confidence with facial proportions and allowed me to better understand the use of tone in my drawings. Afterwards, I carried out much more experimentation with various painting techniques such as... - Underpainting  - Flesh tones - Impasto  MOCK UP Throughout the project I was researching various artists and sculptors. In the end, I focused on Michelangelo's work and produced this mock up in acrylic. I found acrylic paint quite hard to blend and didn't like the way the paint sat on the canvas, I then did some experimenting with oil paints Finally, I found the absence of colour left the painting quite boring. Therefore I decided I wanted to use the background in order to make the piece more exiting  - St. David's Statue                Florence, Italy  Backg

3D Modelling

Matchbox Challenge   In the beginning of my A-level art course, I was often set frequent "two week challenges". We would be given a vague brief and sent away for 2 weeks to create whatever we wanted.  In November 2021 we were given the "matchbox challenge" and asked to create anything with a matchbox. I saw it as an opportunity to create a 3D architecture model. Inspired by Habitat 67, I created this out of 30 mini matchboxes.  Kristine Emerson Response  This is a recent piece of work I created as experimentation for my Year 13 final piece. I love the artistic style of the sculpture and the messy texture of the cardboard. Minty Sainsbury In year 12, as part of a two-week challenge, I constructed seven wooden model houses which get gradually advanced as they follow down a wooden board, this reflected the journey I hope art and design will take me on. As I progress through my education and career, the quality of the architecture I’m producing is becoming increasin

ArchiCAD

Image
Digital Software  During my work work placement with A&Q Partnership in July, I was given some hands on experience with ArchiCAD software. I was instructed to design my own house. This placement allowed me to familiarise myself with this modern technology. - Ground Floor First Floor - - Second Floor These were the elevations of each side in the house. If I could re-visit this design I would be sure to add in a more textured finish to the walls. Finally, these were various 3D perspective photographs of the house. Overall, I am very happy with my first trial of the software. However, in future I will be sure to conclude the design with some final details, including a realistic surrounding landscape.

Neil Whitehead Study

Ink & Watercolour Artist  Neil Whitehead was one of the first architecture artists I looked at when I started my art project. I was very intrigued by the detail in his drawings which was contrasted by the messy wash of colour underneath. He typically works with ink and watercolour, however, I wanted to experiment was various background materials such as: acrylic paint, coloured pencils and tissue paper. Final Response After a lot of experimentation with his style I created my response to his work with my own drawing. I loved the urban landscape he used, however, I wanted to focus my outcome on one building in order to obtain much more detail. I'm very happy with the outcome

Ian Murphy Study

Ink Artist                                  Ian Murphy is a fine liner Artist. He achieves his style by layering up a unique background and drawing on top. What I like most of all about his work is the use of tone, he manages to create such detailed work with just one colour.  My Response   The Tempietto - Rome, Italy             To create Ian Murphy's style in his background's. He starts by sticking brown paper vertically down the page, then layers newspaper horizontally on top. Afterwards, he covers the page in PVA glue and sticks on crumpled parchment paper. Once it's dried he adds a layer of charcoal. I wanted to replicate this design in a 3D model Dome Construction
